Alphabet’s CIO, Ruth Porat, has warned that the U.S. is facing increasing pressure to maintain its lead in AI technology over China. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Porat noted that while the U.S. is ahead in AI models and chip technology, China is either on par or ahead in the diffusion of basic capabilities. This technological advancement by China has raised geopolitical tensions, prompting former President Joe Biden to impose restrictions on the global sale of advanced AI chips to prevent them from reaching perceived U.S. adversaries. Porat also mentioned that while most world leaders prefer to collaborate with Washington for digital transformation, they may seek alternatives if necessary.
